Interview with Colleen Sedgwick

Q. Colleen, how did you get started in the pet sitting industry?

Well, in a nutshell, I was unhappy in my career as a teacher and coming from a long line of entrepreneurs I knew that I wanted to work for myself. I just didn’t know what type of business to start. Someone gave me the great advice to do something that I loved and had a true passion for. When it was put in such simple terms, I knew immediately what it was… PETS! I am a hardcore animal lover, so I knew in my heart that starting a pet sitting business was the perfect fit for me. I opened the door of Pet Nanny-Pet Sitters of the Main Line in 2001 and have been loving my “job” and my life ever since. I’m able to make a living centered on my passion. I’m a lucky gal!

 

Q. How did you go from “pet sitting business owner” to “pet sitting business coach”?

After experiencing success with Pet Nanny, I started to receive inquiries from other pet sitting business owners asking me for help with their own businesses. I gladly offered my words of wisdom, which in turn brought them great success. It was exciting and fulfilling to witness. I never really considered doing it professionally until the requests started to come in on a weekly basis. I then thought to myself… “Is the universe trying to tell me something?” Bottom line is that I have done extremely well in the pet sitting profession and I want to share my knowledge. I want others to recognize that they can have amazing success in the pet sitting industry as well. The pet care industry is cash cow and I have tons to offer and teach to those motivated individuals who want to tap into it.

 

Q. How are you different from other “business coaches?”

The pet sitting industry is a very specific niche. Having somebody with specific knowledge regarding the marketing, team expansion and best practices and systems is what sets me apart from other business coaches. I only work with pet sitting business owners who want to get more clients, make more money, work less time and ultimately grow their business and create the lifestyle that they want. I share all my expertise and my step-by-step plan called The Pet Nanny Success System™.

 

Q. So, is it safe to say that you consider yourself a pet sitting industry expert?

I absolutely do and I’m proud of that! The revenue that I bring into my business is quite substantial compared to most other pet sitting businesses. This isn’t by accident. I have worked tirelessly trying to figure it all out. I have hired my own private mentors, attended seminars, completed courses and programs, and participated in private mastermind meetings with some of the best and brightest in small business. You name it, I have done it… and it has paid off ten-fold.

 

Q. Who are your clients exactly?

I mentor two types of clients. The first is “Build-Up Betty” or “Build-Up Bill.” These entrepreneurs are in the first few years of starting their business, meaning they are in the building stages of their business. They may be doing the pet sitting part-time and want to transition it into a full-time career, or they may be doing it full-time, but need to increase their revenue. Their biggest need right now is getting clients and bringing them in consistently.

The second type of client is “Multiply Mary” or “Multiply Mike.” These entrepreneurs have an established business. They have clients, they’re making money, but they do everything themselves and have no time to grow their business substantially, not to mention have any time for themselves. Their biggest need right now is leverage. They need systems and practices to multiply their income and work less.

 

Q. What type of person do you work best with?

I work best with enthusiastic individuals who are committed to building a successful business. As I am an action-oriented person, I prefer to work with business owners who consistently take action themselves and avoid making excuses as I guide them in creating the pet sitting business of their dreams. It truly overjoys me to witness motivated people who recognize their inner potential and business potential, and accomplish their goals.

 

Q. What types of professionals will your programs NOT work for?

I say this in the most respectful way possible, but I choose not to work with people who are whiners, chronic skeptics, or those who make constant excuses for not getting their assignments completed. These folks will not get results from our time together, and I prefer to not waste their time or money. Fair enough?

 

Q. What exactly is the “Pet Nanny Success System™?”

First, we identify who your ideal client is and how you are their “problem-solver.” We will then craft a compelling marketing message that will have these ideal clients calling you ready to sign-up as opposed to you chasing them. Finally, we discuss the best ways to reach them and turn them into paying clients.

#5. Strategize your pricing and packages
We will evaluate your pet sitting and dog walking services and develop the best pricing strategies and packages for your business.

#6. Build a website that works connected with a strong online presence
Your website is the cornerstone of your business. We will implement my step-by-step plan to create a powerful and functional site that will pull clients in. We also discuss how to develop a strong online presence that will drive traffic to your site.

#7. Create your marketing power wheel
